Lorenzo Belenguer, born in 1970, is a notable Spanish non-binary artist, active in both Valencia and London. Prior to embarking on a full-time artistic career, Belenguer managed an art gallery for six years. Their artistic oeuvre is heavily influenced by Arte Povera and Minimalism.
Belenguer's notable works include "Testimonies," created for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. They were the sole Spanish artist featured in the Red Gallery's "Factual Nonsense," an exhibit paying homage to Joshua Compston, a key figure in the emergence of the Young British Artists (YBAs). Belenguer's other exhibitions and performances took place in prestigious venues such as the Serpentine Gallery, Tate Liverpool, and Tate Modern.
In July 2014, Belenguer participated in the "Marvellous Mix-ups X1 Big Deal" art exhibition in London, followed by an invitation to the "We Could not Agree" exhibit during the Frieze Art Fair Week in October 2014. Early 2016 saw Belenguer establishing a studio in Villar del Arzobispo, Valencia, named "Estudio Mediterraneum," aimed at fostering an artist residency exchange between London and Valencia. In May of the same year, they curated and exhibited in "NY/Rome Minimalism/Arte Povera," which included artist Gavin Turk.
By May 2016, Belenguer was residing in both London and Valencia. In 2017, they initiated the Incognito Art Gallery project in Notting Hill, London, which was noted for its unique entry donation system. More recently, in January 2023, Belenguer began the Queer Tarot project, a reinterpretation of Tarot cards embracing non-binary and gender-fluid perspectives, utilizing gender-neutral nouns and symbols from various traditions to challenge traditional gender roles and promote self-discovery and self-love.
